About this construction

Pattern & sewing notes

  • A ring cut from a circle: the waist is the inner circle, so the radius is the waist measurement divided by 3.14 for a half sun, 6.28 for a sun, and 12.56 for a double sun.
  • Part of the skirt is on the bias and stretches: after sewing, hang the skirt for 3 days, then level the hem.
  • More fullness means a wider hem; the pieces are cut as half circles at most. The zip can be at the centre back or at the side for a half sun and a sun (a full front and a full back); a double sun uses the centre back.
  • Side pockets and a waistband can be added. The pattern shows how much fabric to buy for the fabric width you enter.
